On February 10, 2026, Asta Sonner Fiji's leading AI expert and Director of Communications at Chatbot Builder AI and PayMeGPT was invited to join the panel discussion at the World Safer Internet Day event, held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa in Nadi.
The event, organised by the Online Safety Commission and UNFPA Pacific, brought together key figures from law enforcement, government, and the technology sector to address one of the most pressing themes of our time: "Smart Tech, Safe Choices: Exploring the Safe and Responsible Use of AI."
A Seat at the Table
Sonner sat alongside Online Safety Commissioner Filipe Batiwale and Fiji Police Force Director of Criminal Investigations Senior Superintendent Serupepeli Neiko, serving as the only AI practitioner on the panel and providing a real-world builder's perspective.
His inclusion on the panel reflects a growing recognition that conversations about online safety and AI regulation require voices from those who are actively building and deploying AI solutions, alongside those responsible for policy and enforcement.
"I was honoured to be invited by the Online Safety Commission and UNFPA Pacific to contribute to this important discussion," Sonner said. "The conversation around AI safety needs to include the people who understand the technology at a practical level."
Education, Regulation, and Action Not Fear
Sonner's message to the audience was clear: the same technology that creates online threats can also be used to fight them.
"AI is not inherently dangerous. It's a tool, and like any tool, the outcome depends on how it's used," Sonner shared during the panel. "We need to focus on education, regulation, and action. Not fear."
He emphasised that Fiji has a strong opportunity to lead the Pacific region in responsible AI adoption, particularly as the country navigates its first National Digital Strategy 2025–2030.
With AI adoption accelerating globally, small island nations like Fiji can set an example for how to embrace new technology while protecting communities.
"Fiji is in a position to lead the Pacific in this," Sonner said. "And it starts with conversations like today's."
